Welcome to SASS

The South African Spectroscopic Society (SASS) is a non-profit organisation which was established in 1969, and arose out of the Spectroscopic Discussion Group which began five years earlier. The main objectives of the Society are to further the exchange of knowledge of spectroscopy by means of conferences, meetings and publications, and to promote research, study and the use and application of spectroscopy at universities, technikons, research laboratories and in industry.

PhoenixIn terms of the Society's constitution, "spectroscopy" is defined as all sciences relating to electro-magnetic and particle spectra.

The Society is associated with the South African Chemical Institute and the South African Institute of Physics for purposes of closer collaboration between disciplines.

Members of the Society are active in both local and international conferences, and the Society is represented by two members at the meetings of National Delegates of Spectroscopists held at the biennial conferences of the Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale (CSI).

Members are also active in the affairs of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry  (IUPAC).

SASS is co-hosting Geoanalysis 2009

As a result of generous sponsorship from a number of suppliers of spectroscopic equipment, the Society is in a position to provide financial support to enable members, especially students and members of staff at academic institutions, to attend meetings. To be eligible for support, members must be presenting papers or posters at meetings. Members may apply to the Secretary for financial support, and all applications will be considered by the central committee.
